MIAMI, Jan. 5 (UPI) - Tim Duncan had 19 points and nine rebounds Monday to
lead the San Antonio Spurs to a 91-84 victory over Miami.
George Hill added 15 points and seven rebounds for the Spurs, who have won
eight of nine and moved a game ahead of idle New Orleans in the NBA
Southwest division.

Burrell leaves Phillies for Rays
TAMPA, Fla., Jan. 5 (UPI) - Outfielder-designated hitter Pat Burrell has
left one World Series team for another, signing a two-year deal Monday with
the Tampa Bay Rays.
Tampa Bay didn't say how much it will pay Burrell but there have been
reports the contract is worth $16 million.

Mexico rattled by earthquake
MEXICO CITY, Jan. 5 (UPI) - A minor earthquake rattled Mexico's Baja
Peninsula Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
Officials said the quake was centered about 100 miles off the coast of the
peninsula.
The tremor hit early Monday, rattling homes and other buildings, though
reportedly caused no damage, Mexico's El Universal newspaper reported
online.

Father, son charged in tombstone theft
LATHAM, N.Y., Jan. 5 (UPI) - Police said they have arrested a father and
son who allegedly plotted to steal thousands of pounds of tombstones from a
granite company in New York state.
Investigators said Demetrius Lanier, 35, and his son, Shateek Lanier, 19,
attempted to leave Stefanazzi & Spargo Granite Co.
